How much should I plan on making to live in the NYC area?
I know that this varies depending on what kind of lifestyle you want to have or what you consider comfortable, but generally speaking what’s a reasonable salary to live on in the NYC area? I don’t need to live right in Manhattan and would be perfectly fine with living in any of the boroughs so long as it’s a safe neighborhood or across the river on the Jersey side as well. I’m pretty frugal when it comes to money and wouldn’t try living a glamorous lifestyle. Internet, cell phone, TV are the major utilities for me. A motorcycle or public transit would be my means of communication and I currently don’t have any debt to speak of.
So, considering this very basic information, throw me some salaries that I would be able to live decently off of.
Hi, Jordan. You do not need to make 100k to live in one of the boroughs or in NJ. Definitely not. I know Brooklyn best, so I will use it as an example. If you are ok with not being in THE most desirable neighborhoods, but a little further, less expensive, but still great areas, you can find a decent one-bedroom around $1500. That’s $18,000 a year. In the olden days, your rent was supposed to be about a quarter of your gross income. Today, especially in New York, they say you’re ok if it’s one third. So, speaking roughly, that means grossing around $55-60K.
And, you could do it for less if you were willing to either live further, where a one-bedroom might start at $1200 (still safe areas), or if you took a studio in one of the closer places I’m referring to above, also probably starting around $1200. So, that would bring you down to 45K.
Beyond that, if you don’t mind living with roomates, you could save even more, perhaps paying under $1000 in rent. Then you wouldn’t need more than about 36K. So . .. . yeah, it’s definitely possible on way less that 100K if you don’t need to live in the hippest parts of the city and you are pretty frugal as you say.
People site the 100K plus figure for young people who want to be in the middle of everything in Manhattan and also have enough for nightlife, eating out regularly and spending on things that it sounds like you don’t need to spend a whole lot on like expensive clothes.

EDIT: I’m have no idea where that person’s getting that you need at least $250,000 a year to live in a $2600/month apt. That’s just . .. wrong. As a single pretty frugal person, you could make $100,000/year and pay $2600/month.
